High-precision measurements of light-induced torque on absorbing microspheres

Opt. Lett., Vol. 29, No. 19. (2004), pp. 2231-2233.

X Abstract

Laser beams have been demonstrated to be capable of exerting torque as well as forces on microparticles. Using a custom magneto-optic manipulator, we directly measured the torque exerted by laser light on absorbing microspheres as a result of the transfer of spin angular momentum. A general method for measuring torque has been developed, and the experimental apparatus has shown a sensitivity of ?1 pN/nm. © 2004 Optical Society of America.

CiteULike organises scholarly (or academic) papers or literature and provides bibliographic (which means it makes bibliographies) for universities and higher education establishments. It helps undergraduates and postgraduates. People studying for PhDs or in postdoctoral (postdoc) positions. The service is similar in scope to EndNote or RefWorks or any other reference manager like BibTeX, but it is a social bookmarking service for scientists and humanities researchers.
