One of my favorite Sturm quotations: "[T]o alter or abolish it [the Roman Catholic Mass] would awaken a great deal of ill will both outside and inside the city, and because the whole matter requires further thought and deliberation by the Senate.... Both sides are Christians, however, may God have mercy !" This is Jakob Sturm on the Strasbourg policy of not outlawing the Catholic mass. He made this remark in 1525. Brady, Protestant Politics (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.: Humanities Press, 1995), p. 54. He cites his own work, Turning Swiss , pp. 75f., as the source.
