AbstractSulfate is retained in a fired clay product as adsorbed sulfur trioxide and sulfate salts. These salts react with silicates at temperatures within the firing range of clay products, but the reaction rates and mechanisms may prevent the reaction from going to completion. The mechanism of efflorescence has been clarified by these studies.
