X Abstract

To better understand Socratic questioning, the authors reviewed the literature regarding the Socratic method. Despite being regarded as a fundamentally important psychotherapeutic procedure, a great deal of discrepancy exists concerning various aspects of the method, and these incongruities are described. Discord occurs in the literature, for example, concerning the purpose of Socratic questioning and also what the components of the technique might be. It is suggested that striving to achieve clarity regarding the Socratic method would enhance psychotherapy practices and maximize the benefits experienced by clients.
