X Abstract

The ecological restoration of degraded forest lands is a difficult undertaking which requires a global and long-term view of the structure, diversity, functioning and dynamics of the ecosystem in question. To meet that aim, a framework of the ecological processes which lead to forest restoration is presented. Two main phases of restoration are described (rehabilitation, and the resulting rehabilitated ecosystem), and various successive ecological stages (degraded ecosystem, rehabilitated ecosystem, target ecosystem). The authors stress the potential importance of restoration ecology to forestry.
