AbstractIn recent years, grassroots categorization tools have appeared on the internet, dubbed “folksonomies”. Categorization is done by adding keywords to resources, called “tags”. One such folksonomy is used by the website LibraryThing, which provides the possibility to catalog books online. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of the site in defining the aboutness of books, as well as the difference in tagging behavior between non-professional and professional catalogers. It is argued that folksonomies can provide useful insights and add complementary terms to traditional classification schemes.
