AbstractGetting back to basics could be the building concept of the future. Howick resident Hsen-Han Khoo is a member of one of nine university teams challenging current building methods by creating sustainable houses from easily sourced materials. The Sustainable Habitat Challenge national coordinator Tim Bishop says it is aimed at "producing real homes, generating new knowledge and building partnerships between people with the skills and resources to make sustainable living a reality". Each team designs and builds a home using materials like mud, brick and straw bale. Hsen-Han\\textquoterights Auckland University team have their home under construction in Rotorua, funded by the Environment Ministry\\textquoterights sustainable management fund. Their concept is called Whareuku, meaning earth house, and is aimed towards rural Maori communities. Construction techniques are some of the oldest in the world, stemming back to the building of the Great Wall of China, says the fourth-year civil engineering student. They also have an emphasis on earthquake protection, and have used an outside consultant for design work. Hsen-Han thinks the building concept could catch on in rural communities. "It\\textquoterights been a lot of trial and error." He has enjoyed the project because he is an environmentalist, and his part has focused on energy efficiency. The team is using walls that are designed to absorb the heat in summer and release it in winter, he says. A principle of the challenge is to use local resources and labour to improve standards of living while minimising cost. Once complete, the house will be occupied by a family. After completion the home\\textquoterights efficiency will continue to be tested over the following two years. The winning team will be announced in September next year.
