Limb lengthening in children may result in excessive forces on joint cartilage, in joint contracture and in joint dislocation. To prevent the negative result of excessive joint cartilage compressive forces and to prevent other joint complications, joint distraction may be a remedy. It may also prevent excessive forces on the growth plate cartilage and prevent growth retardation after lengthening. We have data that show an enhanced growth after lengthening combined with knee joint distraction.
