I investigate the origin and evolution of conventional practices in terms of locally interacting human agents trying to minimize the cognitive effort of sharing the beliefs and intentions that underlie their collaborative activities. In my thesis study, the processes of establishing ad hoc conventions of reference enhanced concept learning and lead to better decision-making. My current work looks at the cultural transmission of referential conventions and the concepts with which these are bound.
