Trained in Physics (to BSc) and then Sanskrit, Prakrit and Pali (BA, MA, DPhil). Worked several years at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, as curator of Sanskrit and Indian manuscripts and honorary lecturer in the history of medicine. Moved in 2002 to a job as Senior Research Fellow at University College London, researching the history of medicine in India during the Early Modern period and working on Sanskrit and medical topics. Then in 2009, moved to the International Institute of Asian Studies, Leiden, and later the University of Vienna, dept. Asian studies.
