    <description>&lt;i&gt;Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries (2006), pp. 39-50.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Digital access and preservation questions for cultural heritage institutions have focused primarily on primary repositories — that is, around collections of discrete digital objects and associated metadata. Much of the promise of the information age, however, lies in the ability to reuse, repurpose, combine and build complex digital objects[1-3]. Repositories need both to preserve and make accessible primary digital objects, and facilitate their use in a myriad of ways. Following the lead of other annotation projects, we argue for the development of secondary repositories where users can compose structured collections of complex digital objects. These complex digital objects point back to the primary digital objects from which they are produced (usually with URIs) and augment these pointers with user-generated annotations and metadata. This paper examines how this layered approach to user generated metadata can enable research communities to move forward into more complex questions surrounding digital archiving and preservation, addressing not only the fundamental challenges of preserving individual digital objects long term, but also the access and usability challenges faced by key stakeholders in primary digital repository collections—scholars, educators, and students. Specifically, this project will examine the role that secondary repositories can play in the preservation and access of digital historical and cultural heritage materials with particular emphasis on streaming media.</description>

The use of hierarchy allows the definition of complex transition structures over arbitrarily large sets of objects. Using this approach a tutoring tool has been designed and tested in the context of an introductory course in Computer Architecture. Experimental results clearly show the positive impact of the proposed content adaptation over how students learn concepts.</description>

Proceedings of the 34th Annual Hawaii International Conference on (2001), 8 pp..&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While hypertext was originally conceived as an approach to the management of scientific and technical information, it has been embraced with great enthusiasm by several members of the literary community for the promises it offers towards new approaches to narrative. Experiments with hypertext based interactive narrative were originally based solely on verbal text but have more recently extended to include digital video artifacts. The most accomplished of these experiments, HyperCafe, provided new insights into the nature of narrative and how it may be presented; but it also offered an opportunity to reconsider other text types. The paper is an investigation of the application of an approach similar to HyperCafe to a descriptive text. We discuss how the approach serves the needs of description and illustrate the discussion with a concrete example. We then conclude by considering the extent to which our experiences with description may be applied to our continuing interest in narrative.</description>

Two realistic goldfish agents appearing on a display can recognize the palm position and finger motion (finger sign) of the user, then respond to them in real-time. The authors have named this kind of interactive agent a `software robot'. A modeling software named `BSSM' (Bone-Structured Solid Modeler), which is suitable for representing deformable objects (such as living things) plays an important role in the synthesis of realistic goldfish images. To realize the real-time interaction, they have developed an image recognition and synthesis system `TN-VIT' (Transputer Network with Visual Interface for Transputers). The image synthesis speed of the TN-VIT is about 25 frames per second including the finger-sign recognition process. The technology discussed is expected to play an important role in the realization of future visual human interfaces</description>

Cinematic Hypertext is for theorists and designers ready to consider a new paradigm for framing the medium and its characteristics: film. Clara Mancini guides the reader through an eclectic mix of ideas from technology, psycholinguistics, visual design, narratology and film theory. Educational systems have developed first from computer assisted learning systems to more complex intelligent tutoring systems and hypermedia systems. Intelligent tutoring systems are knowledge centred and are able to adapt the instructional sequence to the particular user. On the other hand, hypermedia systems are based on hypermedia and the user can freely browse the learning material. The last two technologies have merged into so called adaptive hypermedia systems. They are actually hypermedia systems, which incorporate some intelligent tutoring techniques. Therefore, they offer the freedom of exploratory learning, yet dynamically adapt to the individual user's knowledge level and learning goals, provide intelligent guidance, and support the user in acquiring knowledge. In intelligent tutoring systems, the adaptation is based on user modelling. Since adaptive hypermedia systems take the adaptation principles from intelligent tutoring systems, they also use user models for adapting the system to a particular user. Hence, the user model is one of the most important components for adaptation. Although the adaptation itself can be realised through different techniques, it is always based on the user model. In the paper, adaptive hypermedia systems and their general structure are described first. (2000), pp. 71-77.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hypertext and hypermedia applications allow users to navigate through large sets of information in many different ways. It is impossible for an author to foresee all possible paths a user may follow. Adaptive hypermedia is a fairly new research field on the crossroad of hypertext (or hypermedia) and user modeling. Its goal is to improve usability of hypermedia through the automatic adaptation of hypermedia applications to individual users. Adaptive hypermedia systems (AHS) offer methods and techniques for adapting the content of information pages and the links between pages. A number of experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the benefits of adaptive hypermedia, mostly of adaptation of link structures. In this article we argue that the benefits of using an AHS are a result of careful authoring, more than of the adaptive techniques themselves.</description>

(1993), pp. 193-220.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hypertext systems allow flexible access to topics of information, but this flexibility has disadvantages. Users often become lost or overwhelmed by choices. An adaptive hypertext system can overcome these disadvantages by recommending information to users based on their specific information needs and preferences. Simple associative matrices provide an effective way of capturing these user preferences. Because the matrices are easily updated, they support the kind of dynamic learning required in an adaptive system.</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-Based Systems (2002), pp. 384-387.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This paper describes Tutor/ADAPT, a working model and framework for scrutable adaptive hypertext. This enables the user to scrutinise the system to determine how the document was adapted. They are also able to control the adaptation by altering the user model at any time in the interaction. The user can see which parts of the user model have been used to control aspects, which appear in the document. The system has three major parts: an authoring tool; the web based interface; and ATML is the language used for adaptive hypertext source documents. This paper describes the user view, especially the scrutability support.</description>
