Applying Psychological Theories to Educational Practice

Am Educ Res J, Vol. 45, No. 1. (1 March 2008), pp. 150-165.

Two approaches to the application of psychological theories to education might be referred to as domain-general and domain-specific. The domain-general approach seeks a general theory of cognitive and other skills that apply across subject-matter areas. The domain-specific approach seeks to apply specific theories within given domains, such as reading or mathematics. The latter approach is more widely used. But it fails to provide a unified model of learning and instruction. One of the greatest challenges facing modern research in learning and instruction is devising and then empirically testing domain-general theories. This article describes efforts to devise and test one such model, the theory of successful intelligence. 10.3102/0002831207312910

Was unterscheidet uns von anderen Menschen? Was macht uns aus? Was ist soziale Kompetenz? Und für die Prüfungsvorbereitung: Merksätze, Studienboxen, Prüfungsfragen, deutsch-englisches Glossar. Neu in der 4. Auflage: das neurowissenschaftliche Paradigma der Persönlichkeitspsychologie.
Marketing actions can modulate neural representations of experienced pleasantness

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (14 January 2008), 0706929105.

Despite the importance and pervasiveness of marketing, almost nothing is known about the neural mechanisms through which it affects decisions made by individuals. We propose that marketing actions, such as changes in the price of a product, can affect neural representations of experienced pleasantness. We tested this hypothesis by scanning human subjects using functional MRI while they tasted wines that, contrary to reality, they believed to be different and sold at different prices. Our results show that increasing the price of a wine increases subjective reports of flavor pleasantness as well as blood-oxygen-level-dependent activity in medial orbitofrontal cortex, an area that is widely thought to encode for experienced pleasantness during experiential tasks. The paper provides evidence for the ability of marketing actions to modulate neural correlates of experienced pleasantness and for the mechanisms through which the effect operates. 10.1073/pnas.0706929105

Humans Ignore Motion and Stereo Cues in Favor of a Fictional Stable World

Current Biology, Vol. 16, No. 4. (21 February 2006), pp. 428-432.

SummaryAs we move through the world, our eyes acquire a sequence of images. The information from this sequence is sufficient to determine the structure of a three-dimensional scene, up to a scale factor determined by the distance that the eyes have moved 1 and 2. Previous evidence shows that the human visual system accounts for the distance the observer has walked 3 and 4 and the separation of the eyes 5, 6, 7 and 8 when judging the scale, shape, and distance of objects. However, in an immersive virtual-reality environment, observers failed to notice when a scene expanded or contracted, despite having consistent information about scale from both distance walked and binocular vision. This failure led to large errors in judging the size of objects. The pattern of errors cannot be explained by assuming a visual reconstruction of the scene with an incorrect estimate of interocular separation or distance walked. Instead, it is consistent with a Bayesian model of cue integration in which the efficacy of motion and disparity cues is greater at near viewing distances. Our results imply that observers are more willing to adjust their estimate of interocular separation or distance walked than to accept that the scene has changed in size.
