This paper illustrates how a supervised adaptive resonance theory (ART) system, called fuzzy ARAM (adaptive resonance associative map), can be used to learn user profiles for personalized information dissemination. ARAM learning is online, fast, and incremental. Acquisition of new knowledge does not require re-training on previously learned cases. ARAM integrates both user-defined and system-learned knowledge in a single framework. Therefore inconsistency between the two knowledge sources will not arise. ARAM has been used to develop a personalized news system (PIN). Preliminary experiments have verified that PIN is able to provide personalized news by adapting to user's interests in an online manner and generalizing them to new information on-the-fly</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;Conceptual Modeling - ER 2006 (2006), pp. 168-181.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Event detection is a very important area of research that discovers new events reported in a stream of text documents. Previous research in event detection has largely focused on finding the first story and tracking the events of a specific topic. A topic is simply a set of related events defined by user supplied keywords with no associated semantics and little domain knowledge. We therefore introduce the Anticipatory Event Detection (AED) problem: given some user preferred event transition in a topic, detect the occurence of the transition for the stream of news covering the topic. We confine the events to come from the same application domain, in particular, mergers and acquisitions. Our experiments showed that classical cosine similarity method fails for the AED task, whereas our conceptual model-based approach, through the use of domain knowledge and named entity type assignments, seems promising. We show experimentally that an AED voting classifier operating on a vector representation with name entities replaced by types performed AED successfully.</description>

(25 February 2003), pp. 529-549.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this paper, we present five user experiments on incorporating behavioral information into the relevance feedback process. In particular, we concentrate on ranking terms for query expansion and selecting new terms to add to the user's query. Our experiments are an attempt to widen the evidence used for relevance feedback from simply the relevant documents to include information on how users are searching. We show that this information can lead to more successful relevance feedback techniques. We also show that the presentation of relevance feedback to the user is important in the success of relevance feedback.</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;Information Processing &#38; Management, Vol. 36, No. 2. (01 March 2000), pp. 207-227.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We analyzed transaction logs containing 51,473 queries posed by 18,113 users of Excite, a major Internet search service. We provide data on: (i) sessions -- changes in queries during a session, number of pages viewed, and use of relevance feedback; (ii) queries -- the number of search terms, and the use of logic and modifiers; and (iii) terms -- their rank/frequency distribution and the most highly used search terms. We then shift the focus of analysis from the query to the user to gain insight to the characteristics of the Web user. With these characteristics as a basis, we then conducted a failure analysis, identifying trends among user mistakes. We conclude with a summary of findings and a discussion of the implications of these findings.</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;Web Intelligence, IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on (2007), pp. 706-712.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Adaptive information filtering is a promising tool for both casual Web news readers and professional intelligence analysts. Adaptive filtering augments the traditional query- or profile-based rankings provided by search engines. An interesting research challenge in this context is to offer users more control over the rankings by letting them mediate between the two extremes -- query- and profile-based rankings. To address this challenge, we developed an adaptive relevance-based visual exploration tool based on the VIBE (Visual Information Browsing Environment) visualization approach, which was previously developed at our School. This paper presents the rationale and functionality of this visual exploration tool and reports the results of its preliminary evaluation.</description>
