    <description>&lt;i&gt;Human-Computer Interaction. Interaction Platforms and Techniques (2007), pp. 966-974.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With advances in tracking and increased computing power, mobile AR systems are popular in our daily life. Researchers in mobile AR technology have emphasized the technical challenges involved in the limitations imposed from mobility. They did not consider context-aware service with user-related information annotation, even if in ubiquitous computing environment, various contexts of both a user and an environment can be utilized easily as well as effectively. Moreover, it is difficult to have access to pervasive but invisible computing resources. At the same time, the more smart appliances become evolved with more features, the harder their user interfaces tend to become to use. Thus, in this paper, we propose Context-aware Mobile Augmented Reality (CaMAR) system. It lets users interact with their smart objects through personalized control interfaces on their mobile AR devices. Also, it supports enabling contents to be not only personalized but also shared selectively and interactively among user communities.</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;Pervasive Computing (2007), pp. 198-215.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mobile phones are increasingly becoming ubiquitous computational devices that are almost always available, individually adaptable, and nearly universally connectable (using both wide area and short range communication capabilities). Until Star Trek-like speech interfaces are fully developed, mobile phones seem thus poised to become our main devices for interacting with intelligent spaces and smart appliances, such as buying train passes, operating vending machines, or controlling smart homes (e.g., TVs, stereos, and dishwashers, as well as heating and light). But how much can a mobile phone simplify our everyday interactions, before it itself becomes a usability burden? What are the capabilities and limitations of using mobile phones to control smart appliances, i.e., operating things like ATMs or coffee makers that typically do not benefit from remote control? This paper presents a user study investigating the use of a prototypical, mobile phone based interaction system to operate a range of appliances in a number of different task settings. Our results show that mobile devices can greatly simplify appliance operation in exceptional situations, but that the idea of a universal interaction device is less suited for general, everyday appliance control.</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;Pervasive Computing (2007), pp. 19-36.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We investigate the use of 2 tagging technologies: Near Field Communication (NFC) and 2-dimensional barcodes. Our investigation combined a field trial and interview based study with an experimental evaluation. The field trial focused on users’ experience of the usability of NFC for a range of trial services, users’ perceptions of NFC use in their daily life context, and users’ suggestions for potential applications of NFC. The tags were embedded in a variety of postcards, table-top signs and posters. The experimental evaluation compared the ease of use of NFC and 2D barcodes, operationalised in terms of time taken to read a specified sequence of tags on posters. We found that for untrained users the 2D barcodes were quicker to use than the NFC tags but that training significantly improved users’ performance with the NFC tags while having no effect on their performance with the barcodes.</description>

    <description>&lt;i&gt;UbiComp 2006: Ubiquitous Computing (2006), pp. 87-104.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This paper presents an analysis, implementation and evaluation of the physical mobile interaction techniques touching, pointing and scanning. Based on this we have formulated guidelines that show in which context which interaction technique is preferred by the user. Our main goal was to identify typical situations and scenarios in which the different techniques might be useful or not. In support of these aims we have developed and evaluated, within a user study, a low-fidelity and a high-fidelity prototype to assess scanning, pointing and touching interaction techniques within different contexts. Other work has shown that mobile devices can act as universal remote controls for interaction with smart objects but, to date, there has been no research which has analyzed when a given mobile interaction technique should be used. In this research we analyze the appropriateness of three interaction techniques as selection techniques in smart environments.</description>

SAINT 2004 Workshops. 2004 International Symposium on (2004), pp. 319-325.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Service systems in public spaces are now being developed by employing ubiquitous computers in these spaces. Such systems must provide services to end users with a wide range of motivations, including unmotivated users who do not actively use the available services. Context-awareness to support these users is thus an important requirement for this kind of ubiquitous computing (UbiComp) system. We propose a service selection method based on registered context types for each end user in order to facilitate ubiquitous service systems in public spaces. By applying this method, we have developed a prototype of an interactive guidance board application and demonstrated its effectiveness.</description>

Users are experiencing more and more inconvenience and frustration as the number and complexity of home devices rise and the amount of content/data stored in the home increases. To address these problems, we have developed middleware technologies to integrate heterogeneous CE devices and allow users to simply select what activities they want to perform in the home. Our middleware software allows users to use a simple pseudo-English interface to achieve home tasks without having to consider where a particular content is located and how to achieve that task.</description>

Smart phones' emerging capabilities are fueling a rise in the use of mobile phones as input devices to such resources as situated displays, vending machines, and home appliances. Mobile phones' prevalence gives them great potential to be the default physical interface for ubiquitous computing applications. We survey interaction techniques that use mobile phones as input devices to ubiquitous computing environments. We use smart phone to describe an enhanced mobile phone. Our analysis blurs the line between smart phones and PDAs such as the Palm Pilot because the feature sets continue to converge.</description>

(2004), pp. 36-43.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi), handheld devices are communicating more frequently with conventional computers in offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, and homes. The smart homes of the future will have ubiquitous embedded computation, and an increasing number of appliances can already communicate wirelessly. The authors launched the Pebbles project to determine whether a handheld device, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) or cell phone, could serve as a simpler, more effective remote control. Office-centered applications include using the PDA instead of a laser pointer, using a PDA to remotely control a PowerPoint presentation, and using a PDA with the nondominant hand to scroll windows on a PC. In the home, we are exploring how to use the PDA as a customizable, intelligent personal universal controller (PUC) for appliances, creating high-quality control panels on the handheld using a high-level specification of the appliance's capabilities. We are also interested in how PDAs can assist in providing both appliance and computer access for the disabled, including the development of new text entry methods for the motor-impaired user.</description>

Fifth Annual IEEE International Conference on (2007), pp. 262-271.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although mobile services can be used ubiquitously, their employment and the interaction with them are still restricted by the constraints of mobile devices. In order to facilitate and leverage mobile interaction with services, we present a generic framework that combines Semantic Web Service technology and Physical Mobile Interaction. This interaction paradigm uses mobile devices to extract information from augmented physical objects and use it for a more intuitive and convenient invocation of associated services. For that purpose, the presented framework exploits Web Service descriptions for the automatic and dynamic generation of customizable user interfaces that support and facilitate Physical Mobile Interaction. This generic approach to mobile interaction with services through the interaction with physical objects promises to meet the complementary development of the Internet of Things. A user study with a prototype application for mobile ticketing confirms our concept and shows its limits.</description>

Fifth Annual IEEE International Conference on (2007), pp. 251-261.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the visions of pervasive computing is using mobile computers to interact with networked devices. A question raised by this vision is: Should the user-interfaces of these devices be handcrafted manually or generated automatically? Based on experience within the domain of desktop computing, the answer seems to be that automatic generation is not flexible enough to support a significant number of useful interfaces but requires substantially less coding effort for the interfaces it can create. We show that the answer is much more complicated when we consider networking of traditional appliances such as stereos and TVs. Using qualitative arguments and quantitative experimental data, we show that the manual vs. generated issue must be resolved based on: (a) not only user-interface programming and flexibility but also several other metrics such as space and time costs, binding time, and reliability (b) whether it is a graphical or speech based user-interface, (c) the size of the device user-interface, (d) whether the manually written user-interface code is available at the mobile computer or at a remote machine, and (e) the network bandwidth between the mobile computer and remote factory.</description>

Contory integrates multiple strategies for context provisioning, namely internal sensors-based, external infrastructure-based, and distributed provisioning in ad hoc networks. Applications can query Contory about context items of different types, using a declarative query language which features on-demand, periodic, and event-based context queries. Contory allows applications to utilize different provisioning mechanisms depending on resource availability and presence of external infrastructures. This paper illustrates our approach along with its design and implementation on smart phones.</description>

(January 2005), pp. 1-18.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The advancement of wireless networks and mobile computing necessitates more advanced applications and services to be built with context-awareness enabled and adaptability to their changing contexts. Today, building context-aware services is a complex task due to the lack of an adequate infrastructure support in pervasive computing environments. In this article, we propose a Service-Oriented Context-Aware Middleware (SOCAM) architecture for the building and rapid prototyping of context-aware services. It provides efficient support for acquiring, discovering, interpreting and accessing various contexts to build context-aware services. We also propose a formal context model based on ontology using Web Ontology Language to address issues including semantic representation, context reasoning, context classification and dependency. We describe our context model and the middleware architecture, and present a performance study for our prototype in a smart home environment.</description>
