    <description>&lt;i&gt;Business-Driven IT Management, 2007. BDIM '07. 2nd IEEE/IFIP International Workshop on (2007), pp. 19-28.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Business-driven IT management (BDIM) aims at managing enterprise IT infrastructure and services efficiently and at improving business results at the same time. BDIM is based on mappings between IT technical performance metrics and business relevant metrics and exploit the linkage to provide decision support to IT management so as to maximize business value and IT-Business alignment. As an example, the number of successfully executed IT infrastructure changes can be mapped to financial loss due to the service disruption experienced by customers when the changes take place. Up to now, there has been some research effort in proposing and applying BDIM solutions to IT management with potential gains for the business. However, much remains to be researched, prototyped and validated before this new IT management discipline can become widely applicable. This paper presents a research agenda for BDIM. After reviewing BDIM concepts and proposing a framework to assist in defining and describing BDIM usage domains, the paper discusses ongoing work and outlines some research challenges.</description>

We describe a method and a system for decision support in IT service management driven by alignment with the business objectives of the enterprise that the IT supports. Our technical proposition, called IT management by business objectives (MBO) is applicable to most of the domains of IT service management, such as incident management, change management, and others. The technology consists of some components that are reusable across domains, together with guidelines and patterns for building complementary components in order to develop domain-specific solutions</description>

While complexity of services is increasing, personnel to provide and manage services will remain limited. At the same time, IT environments are becoming more dynamic, from the business side as well as from the infrastructure side. The ability to incorporate change faster, more efficiently and reliably has become a measure of quality of enterprise IT organizations. IT responds to these challenges by decoupling functions into services and by improving the linkages between business processes and the supporting IT systems. Service-oriented Architecture has become the accepted pattern for modern enterprise IT. This paper presents the Model Information Flow. It is part of a collaboration between HP Labs and SAP Research. The goal of the collaboration is to explore new approaches of model-driven planning, design and management of enterprise applications in a shared and virtualized IT infrastructure. The goal is to substantially improve the linkage between the business and the IT layer and the ability to manage and accommodate change more efficiently and in a largely automated manner.</description>

In this paper, we define the problem of determining the cost of system administration. For support organizations with fixed budgets, the dominant variant cost is the work and value lost due to time spent waiting for services. We study how to measure and analyze this cost through a variety of methods, including white-box and black-box analysis and discrete event simulation. Simple models of cost provide insight into why some practices cost more than expected, and why transitioning from one kind of practice to another is costly.</description>

These services need to be dynamically provisioned to accomodate rapid changes in the workload patterns. This, in turn, requires a highly automated service provisioning process, for which we were able to leverage a general-purpose workflow language and its execution engine. We have successfully integrated a workflowbased change management system with a commercial service provisioning system that allows the execution of automatically generated change plans as well as the monitoring of their execution.</description>

IEEE/IFIP&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This paper proposes an approach to automated enforcement of service level agreements (SLAs) by constructing information technology (IT) level feedback loops (e.g., admission control, CPU scheduling, load balancing) that achieve business objectives, especially maximizing SLA profits. We develop a framework in which profits are determined by revenues accrued for services delivered (e.g., completed transactions) and rebates to customers if services are unavailable or violate response time constraints. A methodology is described for profit-oriented controller design, and the methodology is applied to a Lotus Notes email server. The methodology relies heavily on modeling design choices to reduce the need for running live experiments. We show that simple linear models suffice to capture the dynamics of the email server we study, even for a time varying workload. In addition, our studies suggest that faster controllers (those with short settling times) consistently provide the best profits since they violate response time constraints less often and they do not sacrifice as much revenue. Last, our studies show that the selection of controller reference value has a significant impact on profits.</description>
