Social Forces, Vol. 75, No. 1. (1996), pp. 269-292.

This study examines the relationship between family structure, private transfers, and the economic well-being of families with children under 18. We use family wealth as a measure of economic well-being to mitigate some of the criticisms of traditional measures based on income. We examine family structure beyond marital status to include remarriage, cohabitation, and the gender of single parenthood. We focus on financial transfers from both kin and nonkin. After analyzing the distribution of family wealth and transfers by family structure, we estimate the effects of family structure, transfers, and their interaction on family wealth. Drawing on data from the National Survey of Families and Households (1987-88), we find that (1) family net wealth and total private transfers vary with family structure along three lines, marriage-remarriage, marriage-cohabitation, and male-female single parenthood; (2) marriage is a wealth-enhancing institution; (3) private transfers promote family net wealth; and (4) marriage reinforces the promoting effect of private transfers on family wealth.

AFDC Benefits and Nonmarital Births to Young Women

The Journal of Human Resources, Vol. 35, No. 2. (2000), pp. 376-391.

Following recent work by Rosenzweig (1999), this paper reexamines the effect of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) benefits on nonmarital childbearing through age 22. Unlike most previous work, Rosenzweig finds a statistically significant and quantitatively large positive AFDC effect. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we replicate his analysis and explore the reasons his findings differ from earlier research findings. We are able to reproduce his main finding in a model that includes state and cohort fixed-effects; we find that control for state effects increases the estimated AFDC effect. When we examine fertility separately by age, we find no AFDC effect on teen non-marital births, but a large effect on the behavior of women in their early 20s.

The exemption decreases the price of a child to a household, thus having a direct relationship to the timing and/or number of children observed in a family. Conditional logit results support this hypothesis by showing that the exemption has a positive and significant impact on the likelihood of having a birth during the period under study.

(1992), pp. 113-126.

Although research on reproductive behavior depends heavily on information from surveys, abortions are characteristically underreported in such data. Estimates of the level of reporting are made for each of the recent major surveys of U.S. women: the 1976, 1982, and 1988 cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth, the 1976 and 1979 National Surveys of Young Women, and the National Longitudinal Surveys of Work Experience of Youth. The estimates are based on comparisons with external counts of abortions taking place. We examine variation by characteristics of women, trends over time, and the possible effects of length of recall and of the way in which questions about abortion are asked. Abortion reporting is found to be highly deficient in all the surveys, although the level varies widely. Whites are more likely to report their abortions than nonwhites. Special, confidential questioning procedures hold promise for improving the results.

(1997), pp. 224-234.

Two conflicting conclusions exist about the relationship between fertility and wage rates in steady-state equilibria in the literature. While Malthus and others predict a positive relation, Barro and Becker find a negative relation. Using several specifications of utility functions, this paper shows that whether bequests are operative or non-operative plays a critical role in determining the relation. Specifically, it is shown that fertility and wage rates are negatively related when bequests are operative; and given some plausible restrictions, they are positively related when bequests are non-operative.
