X Abstract

On the basic assumption that viscosity is a continuous function of shear rate it is deduced that any non-Newtonian fluid should conform to a flow equation of the form where [eta] is the viscosity at shear rate D, [eta]0 and [eta][infinity] are limiting values at respectively zero and infinite rate of shear, and [alpha] is a constant. With a value of 2/3 for the index [eta] the equation is applied successfully to published data on both polystyrene and polyethylene melts. An analysis by Bingham(I) in which the non-Newtonian flow of polymer melts is attributed solely to elasticity is shown to be inadequate.

CiteULike organises scholarly (or academic) papers or literature and provides bibliographic (which means it makes bibliographies) for universities and higher education establishments. It helps undergraduates and postgraduates. People studying for PhDs or in postdoctoral (postdoc) positions. The service is similar in scope to EndNote or RefWorks or any other reference manager like BibTeX, but it is a social bookmarking service for scientists and humanities researchers.
