The goal of this paper is to describe a project we are undertaking in the area of content representation and discovery. We hope to produce a new kind of text mining and visualization tool focused on the identification and exploration of a specific literary phenomenon where correspondents in personal communication are exchanging indications of emotional connection. Previous visualization projects in this field, such as Twistori.com and WeFeelFine.org, work with single words that convey emotion. However, no matter how emotionally revealing they may be, there is also something paradoxically isolating about these individual statements. Most expressions of feeling can be more properly situated within a context of exchange, where one person is writing to another who is writing back, sometimes within a few minutes, but also sometimes over the course of a lifetime. Given this understanding of what constitutes effective communication, our tool can also be applied more broadly in other forms of written communication from chat to email exchange.
