AbstractMonitoring of ant communities in remnant coastal heathland near Portland Vic was conducted to assess the effectiveness of different management strategies to control incursion by the native coastal wattle, Acacia sophorae. Results of pitfall trapping over two years indicated significant differences in ant community structure and composition between intact heath and coastal wattle dominated heath. Some improvement in ant diversity following control of A. sophorae by burning or cutting was observed but complete recovery of native heath ecosystems will take considerable time. It is, therefore, too early to determine the relative effectiveness of different management strategies (A).
