AbstractA new study from London University's Institute of Education challenges stereotypes of black underachievement by telling the stories of 72 black men and women who have risen to the top in Britain today. Portraits of Black Achievement: Composing Successful Careers by Jacqui MacDonald is based on interviews with black professionals in fields including politics, medicine, law, education and the arts. The interviewees, who include comedian Lenny Henry, MP Paul Boateng, journalist Brenda Emmanus and ex-Lambeth Chief Executive Heather Rabbatts, describe their life experiences and talk about what it means to be a successful black professional in contemporary UK.
