My earlier research on the topic has dealt with media messages which contribute to the images and stereotypes influencing the development of young women and girls. Previous research has indicated that adolescent girls may become focused on appearance and popularity, downplaying their academic ability and competence particularly in mathematics and the sciences, with resultant underachievement and avoidance of science-related careers. This paper will focus on cross-gender similarities and differences, and suggested strategies for helping boys and girls to re-define their views of their capabilities and goal direction, in order to be successful as scholars and adults in society today.
