This _EMS_ volume consists of two parts. The first part is devoted to theexposition of the cohomology theory of algebraic varieties. The second partdeals with algebraic surfaces. The authors have taken pains to present thematerial rigorously and coherently. The book contains numerous examples andinsights on various topics.This book will be immensely useful to mathematicians and graduate studentsworking in algebraic geometry, arithmetic algebraic geometry, complex analysisand related fields.The authors are well-known experts in the field and I.R. Shafarevich is alsoknown for being the author of volume 11 of the _Encyclopaedia_.
