X Abstract

This volume of the _Encyclopaedia_ consists of two parts. The first is devotedto the theory of curves, which are treated from both the analytic andalgebraic points of view. Starting with the basic notions of the theory ofRiemann surfaces the reader is lead into an exposition covering the Riemann-Roch theorem, Riemann's fundamental existence theorem, uniformization andautomorphic functions. The algebraic material also treats algebraic curvesover an arbitrary field and the connection between algebraic curves andAbelian varieties. The second part is an introduction to higher-dimensionalalgebraic geometry. The author deals with algebraic varieties, thecorresponding morphisms, the theory of coherent sheaves and, finally, thetheory of schemes. This book is a very readable introduction to algebraicgeometry and will be immensely useful to mathematicians working in algebraicgeometry and complex analysis and especially to graduate students in thesefields.

CiteULike organises scholarly (or academic) papers or literature and provides bibliographic (which means it makes bibliographies) for universities and higher education establishments. It helps undergraduates and postgraduates. People studying for PhDs or in postdoctoral (postdoc) positions. The service is similar in scope to EndNote or RefWorks or any other reference manager like BibTeX, but it is a social bookmarking service for scientists and humanities researchers.
