X Abstract

Slip relative to the crystal structure and orientation of selected hexagonal (TiB2, HfB2, WC, Mo2C), tetragonal (WSi2, MoSi2) and cubic (TiC, ZrC, VC, TiN) single-crystal refractory compounds is compared and discussed, taking into consideration the reported slip systems of the host metals (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Mo, W) where applicable. Room temperature slip was produced by Knoop and Vickers microhardness indentations, at loads ranging from 100 g to 1500 g, on polished samples of all compounds studied. Such slip can also be produced on these compounds by high pressure and compression techniques. Certain correlations are made between microhardness anisotropy and slip behavior in single-crystal TiB2, as representative of Group IVa; these properties are compared with those of HfB2. The slip system for TiN was found to be 111 <110>; this is also the primary slip system for the isostructural ZrC.

CiteULike organises scholarly (or academic) papers or literature and provides bibliographic (which means it makes bibliographies) for universities and higher education establishments. It helps undergraduates and postgraduates. People studying for PhDs or in postdoctoral (postdoc) positions. The service is similar in scope to EndNote or RefWorks or any other reference manager like BibTeX, but it is a social bookmarking service for scientists and humanities researchers.
