External development of male and female strobili, from bud burst to maturity, and of vegetative shoots was studied on noble, Pacific silver, grand, and subalpine firs. The various stages in strobili development are described and illustrated. The sequence in bud burst, male buds first and vegetative last, was consistent for all species. Pollen shedding and female receptivity were well synchronized, although cool moist weather appeared to delay onset of pollen shedding. Synchronization on individual trees makes self-pollination readily possible. Differences in timing of phenological events occurred between locations, years, and species, with noble fir being the last to develop. Forest Sci. 16:356-364.
