X Abstract

In the teaching of interference produced by thin optical films a formula is often derived or quoted in which the path difference is a function of the angle of refraction in the film. The article describes an experiment devised to illustrate this aspect using a metal interference filter with a narrow passband. The experiment also demonstrates a practical application of the interference in thin films different to the usual experiments which depend on 'contour' thickness. In attempting to explain what appeared to be a small difference between experiment and simple theory, the author discovered the complexity of the reflection and refraction of light before being able to justify his initial theory and his analysis of the observations. The experiment is suitable at a simple level for most students but could be used at advanced levels for students of high calibre.

CiteULike organises scholarly (or academic) papers or literature and provides bibliographic (which means it makes bibliographies) for universities and higher education establishments. It helps undergraduates and postgraduates. People studying for PhDs or in postdoctoral (postdoc) positions. The service is similar in scope to EndNote or RefWorks or any other reference manager like BibTeX, but it is a social bookmarking service for scientists and humanities researchers.
