As the preventive role of physiotherapy develops in the occupational health environment, the orientation of training for prevention of musculoskeletal stress among workers requires reappraisal. This paper introduces a model based on an ergonomic systems approach which is used to identify diverse factors which impinge on the worker. It discusses the implications of this model for the enhancement of training programmes for the prevention of musculoskeletal stress at work. Examples of the application of the model are taken from a study of a National Health hospital environment.
