A new kind of system service is described, the availability management service, responsible for ensuring that the services implemented by a distributed system remain available to clients despite failures. The author stresses the main ideas behind this new service, and outlines a simple implementation. Extensions of this initial design to deal with more realistic goals and hypotheses are also discussed
