X Abstract

1. IntroductionHistomorphometric examination of bone biopsies provides information onbone turnover, remodeling, and structure, which cannot be obtained from otherinvestigative approaches such as bone densitometry and biochemical markersof bone turnover. Recently, there have been significant advances inhistomorphometric techniques with the use of computer-assisted analysis andthe development of sophisticated approaches to assessment of microstructureof bone. The application of these techniques has been particularly valuable inanalyzing the cellular pathophysiology of different forms of osteoporosis andin determining the mechanisms by which drugs affect bone. In this chapter wereview current methodology used in the preparation and histomorphometricassessment of histological sections of bone, with particular reference to its plication in humans.
