AbstractThe social psychiatry of AIDS is viewed from the perspective of both the medical and the social consequences of HIV infection and AIDS. These include the responses of patients to diagnosis and the ways that adjustment can be manifested and facilitated, against the background of the social milieu of the patients and the diseass. A strategy for assessment and intervention is given and examines the interaction between the psychological reactions and the manifestations of HIV encephalopathy. The psychological effects of HIV on those who are affected but uninfected are described, including the worried well and cares, touching on the wider reactions to the pandemic.
