Abstract
Work is a major feature in most people's lives. Not only does it provide them with the means of survival in terms of good, clothing and shelter, but also the type of work undertaken by individuals and groups has a major impact upon their self-identity, social status and standard of living. The shift from the Industrial Age to the emerging Information Age has considerable implications for education and training that will be examined in this Handbook.

TVET is currently faced with the challlenges posed by the displacement of the traditionally strong focus upon manual work in favour of mental work, or at least the changing mixture of competencies required in the workplace. The boundaries between manual and mental work are fading away, as many traditional forms of work and the respective preparation processes for learning to work undergo change. The Handbook will examine several occupations that are in transition, due to these changes.

There is a timely need to re-examine the world of work, its educational and training institutions, learning processes, and necessary competencies, effects upon labour markets, school-to-work transititons, the role to gender, principles of equality and equity, roles of the States and the Business and industry, the dominant didactics for learning a profession, assessment of competencies, effects of flexible pathways and curriculum systems, relationship between human capital formation and TVET systems, and other aspects of the field. This is merely a brief listing of aspectcs of the TVET filde, which must be examined and documented, in order to provide the best answers and the best practitioners to improve TVET, and bridge the gap between vocational and academic education, in the 21st century. It is hoped that this Handbook will fulfil this role.
