X Abstract

Various seed insect attack the dipterocarps, the effect of which are often severe. The objectives of the study were to identify the insect pests of four selected dipterocarp seeds and to asses the quantity of seeds damaged by weevils, is one important pest group. The studies were conducted at the Gunung Palung National Park, West Kalimantan. The four species of dipterocarps were selected at the dry lowland and hill dipterocarp rainforest. The species studied were Shorea gibbosa, S. johorensis, S. ovalis and S. pinanga. Six plots (1m x 1m) were set up in radius of 10 meters from parent trees. Seeds collection were carried out at weekly intervals and the number of seeds collected in each plots were recorded. The seeds collected were counted and examined for insect damage. Thus, after examination, the seeds were classified either as mature, mature-ripe and ripe. The obvious insect damage seeds were reared in the bottles, to continue its development. The two species of weevils, Alcidodes sp. and Nanophyes sp. had been found identified from this study. Alcidodes sp. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) emerged from the seeds of S. ovalis. The dipterocarp seeds collected from S. gibbosa, S. johorensis, S. ovalis and S. pinanga were attacked respectively.
