X Abstract

Social work caseloads include a high incidence of alcohol problems. Social workers may have clients who are receiving help from Alcoholics Anonymous, who provide assistance to a large number of problem drinkers. Social workers may lack knowledge and understanding of its work. The origins of AA are described. Some strengths and some criticisms of AA's approach are considered and refuted, with an emphasis on the positive help that can be offered. An exploration is then made of the links between AA's work and some recent developments in working with problem drinkers.
