X Abstract

The article describes problems associated with the use of Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) data in new applications. As a repository of bibliographic records, MARC are shared and copied among many libraries, and in the process of performing these tasks, data problems such as typographical errors and controlled headings do not match authorized forms. Problems also occur when searching for keywords in MARC data, specifically the search for full-text data, including confusing abbreviations and synonyms, and the inability to incorporate cross-references into search results.
