X Abstract

Climate change is one of the most profound environmental and economic challenges that Canadians will face this century. For planners, ratification of the Kyoto Protocol represents an opportunity for change; an opportunity to develop alternative patterns of growth that are more energy efficient and sustainable. In November 2002, the Canadian government released Climate Change Plan for Canada-Achieving Our Commitments Together. A major component of this report is its recognition of sustainable urban planning as an important element in successfully meeting the Canadian national commitment to greenhouse gas emissions reductions established under the Kyoto Protocol. This highlights the fact that global challenges such as energy use and climate change must now be seriously addressed on a neighbourhood scale along with other community goals.
