AbstractSpontaneous emission by a "two-level atom" interacting with a highly excited field mode is described using quantum electrodynamics without time-dependent perturbation theory. It is found that both the line shape and the Lamb shift are affected by the "applied field." Detailed solutions are presented as a function of the population of the "applied-field mode" and as a function of the detuning.
