Abstract1. Pollen collection by Bombus agrorum, B. lucorum and B. hortorum has been sampled by analysis of the pollen residues of larval meconia. 2. Significant differences in the pollens collected by the three species were found: B. agrorum collecting mainly red and white clover, Lotus corniculatus and Vicia; Bombus lucorum, white clover and Ericaceae; and B. hortorum, red clover. 3. Detailed analysis of B. agrorum nests showed no seasonal trend in pollen collection, but pronounced differences in pollen composition between different groups of pupal cells and, to a lesser extent, between cells of the same group. 4. Individual cells of B. agrorum were found to contain a greater variety of predominant pollen types than those of B. lucorum or B. hortorum.
