Abstract

A measure of the amount of oil destroyed by high temperatures deep in the Earth may help to gauge the depths to which oil extraction remains commercially viable, and so be useful in estimating ultimate oil reserves. Hydrocarbon-based fuels make the world go round, and will do so until we run out of the crude oils from which these energy-rich liquids are derived. It may not be a pressing issue in these times of abundant oil and low prices, but it is clear to all involved in oil exploration that this precious resource is limited.
