AbstractObjective: The aim of this review is to provide an analysis of the epistemic status of the biopsychosocial model. Method: A critical comparison of the biopsychosocial model with the general concept of models. Results: In its present form, the biopsychosocial model is so seriously flawed that its continued use in psychiatry is not justified. Conclusion: Further development of theory-based models in psychiatry is urgently needed.
