Abstract

Based on wavelet analysis, by measuring burstiness of network traffic and analyzing its statistical properties, we provide an empirical evidence for connections between self-organized criticality and network traffic, that is, avalanche, duration time and inter-event time of traffic flow fluctuation obey power law, which indicates that self-organized criticality maybe is the origin of fluctuation burstiness. The fact that inter-event time obeys power law confirms further that network traffic exhibits long-term memory and that the current model based on Poisson process has clearly lost its validity
