Notes for this articleThis paper gives a technique for, essentially, summarizing all of the geotagged photos on Flickr.
Approach: 1) Group all photos according a latitude/longitude grid. 2) Cluster photos within each grid cell using visual features. 3) Use associated text (tags,title,description) to find good set of terms, and use this to link to Wikipedia (using the images on the Wikipedia page to verify).
Applications: better search/browsing, setting up for Photo Tourism or multiview stereo, augmented reality (with boundaries?)
They also classify each cluster of photos as an object or event, based on number of users and timespan.
Idea: instead of a fixed-size grid, do some kind of adaptive hierarchy thing.
Observation (from paper): This can link a query image to a Wikipedia page through Flickr.
