X Abstract

This paper presents a short overview of the interplay between language and culture, and some of the theories dealing with linguistic determinism, applied to the concepts of bilingualism and biculturalism. This introduction, where the effects of culture and context on the bilinguals’ cultural identity, on their language choice as well as on codeswitching are being discussed, may serve as conceptual framework for our study. The main purpose of the present study is to examine whether and how cultural factors affect bilinguals’ codeswitching. During 2 months of fieldwork, 48 bilingual students of the German school in Madrid have been recorded in different speech situations. By means of the transcription, coding and analysis of data, several factors constraining different types of codeswitching have been obtained. Our final discussion of the findings reveal codeswitching as a significant feature of bilinguals’ speech repertoire and offers strong evidence of the interdependence of bilingualism and biculturalism.
