X Abstract

Abstract  Fecal incontinence (FI) is defined as the involuntary passage of fecal material through the anal canal. True incontinence must be differentiated from pseudo incontinence. FI is predominately a disease of the elderly or of institutional patients. Fecal incontinence in the nursing home population has been estimated at 47%. We provide a guide to appropriate clinical evaluation, diagnostic testing, and treatment of FI.
