AbstractIn this paper, model calculations are given in order to show how a steady transonic flow in a duct with an abrupt enlargement can become unstable and how in this case a disturbance builds up to a limit-cycle oscillation. The theoretical model of the flow incorporates a supersonic expansion area (bounded by straight jet boundaries and a straight normal shock) which is treated with an integral method applied to the gas dynamic equations. The feedback between the base region and the flow area behind the shock is described by various model equations.
