AbstractThis paper presents a methodology developed to build a new model within the TELEMAC system, which includes both surface and subsurface water flow in a fully deterministic manner. TELEMAC-2D, a numerical model for surface flow based on the Saint-Venant equations is coupled to ESTEL-3D, a groundwater model based on Richards’ equation of partially saturated flow in porous media. The coupled model is first tested on a simple application to test the balance of water volumes and then applied to a floodplain-hillslope type problem.
