Running a mission requires access to information that is stored on network systems. Some of this information is reference data that is relatively static (for example, map data). Other information is operational and dynamic in nature (e.g., chat messages). If an intruder successfully penetrates the trusted portion of the network and gains access to one or more systems on it, sensitive information on which the mission depends may be made unavailable, disclosed, modified, or deleted, thereby jeopardizing the mission’s success. We focus on the challenge of maintaining availability of mission-critical reference information, while also ensuring that information’s integrity and confidentiality, despite penetration of the network by an adversary who can gain privileged access to both client nodes and nodes that store data.
