Abstract

Satellite navigation is defined and the basic principles of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are described together with problems that must be taken into account when using this kind of system. The paper concentrates on the American NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS), and discusses the differences between GPS and the GLONASS system developed in the former Soviet Union, which may become more important in the future.
