1. The demersal fish of the Sierra Leone River can be divided into three categories on the basis of their diet: those which are almost exclusively ichthyophagous, those which feed on the more active members of the invertebrate epifauna together with some fish, and those whose diet is based on the invertebrate infauna and the sedentary epifauna. 2. The percentage composition of the diet of individual species is constantly and irregularly changing, and no seasonal correlation has at present been observed in most species. 3. There are several instances of fish turning from their normal food to a food organism which normally occurs in their stomachs only rarely, and for a short and isolated period eating it almost to the exclusion of other foods. 4. The fish feed throughout the year, feeding intensity varies within relatively narrow limits, and in most species this variation appears to have no seasonal basis. One species is exceptional, in that the results show a marked cyclical depression of the feeding intensity during the wet season, which could be correlated with a corresponding scarcity of its staple food.
