X Abstract

Until recently, it was thought that the only mechanism underlying active amplification in the mammalian cochlea was a conformational change in the motor protein prestin in the lateral membrane of outer hair cells. However, evidence for stereociliary force production attributable to calcium ions entering and then closing the mechanotransducer channels has also been found. These two mechanisms are reviewed and their efficacies and possible interaction discussed.
