AbstractNational systems of education expand organizationally at unequal speeds in different countries and time periods. A nonlinear differential equation model based on ecological theory is advanced to explain these differences. The model is tested empirically, including an analysis of local stability. The results suggest that organizational expansion in large, geographically decentralized systems follows a process of logistic growth with a ceiling set by environmental resources.
